Why Spanish is a good test of a dictation app

Spanish is the language where dictation quality differences become visible fastest. It is large enough — second most common native language on earth — that every serious app claims to support it, but it exercises everything English doesn't: inverted question and exclamation marks, written accents that change meaning (si/sí, el/él), two-register formality, and enormous regional accent variation from Madrid to Mexico City to Buenos Aires.

An app that handles Spanish well has usually invested in its non-English pipeline generally. An app that produces flat, unaccented, English-punctuated Spanish is telling you what its other 98 languages look like.

What we test

Our Spanish test corpus includes formal and informal registers, sentences requiring inverted punctuation, minimal pairs distinguished only by written accent, numbers and dates in Spanish conventions, and paragraphs read in three accents: Castilian, Mexican and Rioplatense. Every app in the ranking gets the identical audio, and the per-language score on the homepage comes from this run.

Two Spanish-specific failure modes separate the field. The first is inverted punctuation: only a minority of apps reliably open questions with ¿. The second is code-switching. Spanish-English mixing is normal speech for hundreds of millions of people, and apps that force a single language choice per session fall apart on it, while apps with automatic language detection handle it gracefully.

Best overall for Spanish: Wispr Flow

Wispr Flow currently produces the cleanest Spanish of any app we tested: reliable inverted punctuation, correct accent marks, proper handling of mixed Spanish-English sentences, and number formatting in Spanish conventions. Its per-language tuning is real, not marketing. The trade-offs are the ones its whole product has: it is cloud-only, subscription-priced, and your audio leaves the machine.

Best on-device for Spanish: Superwhisper and MacWhisper

Both run Whisper models locally and both recognise Spanish speech well — Whisper's Spanish recognition is among its strongest languages. What you give up is the polish layer: punctuation is decent but inverted marks are hit-and-miss, and neither app code-switches automatically. MacWhisper's larger-model options close some of the accuracy gap at the cost of speed on older Macs.

VoiceInk deserves a mention here for the future rather than the present: its Parakeet V3 engine covers Spanish and beats Whisper on European-language punctuation, but its Spanish path is newer and less proven than the two incumbents.

Best free option: Handy

Handy gives you the full Whisper Spanish capability offline and free, with no polish at all. If your Spanish dictation is notes-to-self, first drafts or messaging — anywhere you will edit afterwards — it is genuinely enough. If you need clean formal Spanish text straight from your mouth, it is not the tool.

Our recommendation

If you dictate professionally in Spanish and privacy allows it, Wispr Flow is the current answer. If you need on-device processing, Superwhisper with a large Whisper model is the closest local experience.
