Verdict

The sane default for Mac users who hate subscriptions. Strongest as a transcription workbench; merely good as an always-on dictation key.

Full review

MacWhisper is the app that proved people would pay real money for a good wrapper around an open model. It handles both halves of the job: hold a key and speak into any app, or drop an hour of recorded audio and get a searchable, timestamped transcript.

It is a file-first tool at heart, so if your main need is instant, invisible typing, a dictation-first competitor will feel snappier.
